SuccessFactors History

Lars Dalgaard launched SuccessFactors in 2001. It started out as a SaaS performance management platform, but over time it expanded to include business execution capabilities. SAP bought SuccessFactors in February 2012 and renamed it SAP SuccessFactors. The acquisition was primarily seen as a chance to add current cloud knowledge to SAP’s growing portfolio, allowing SAP to offer a complete cloud-based human capital management suite.

SAP Jam, a social collaboration tool, was offered as an integration option in 2012 to help employees engage with one another and make cloud-based decisions. Team members were able to discuss ideas, identify answers to common business problems, align their goals, and more using the platform.

SAP SuccessFactors has added recruitment marketing and posting, onboarding, and workforce analytics to its list of services. Functionality upgrades for the mobile app, SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Service Center, and the recruiting solution, to name a few, were added in the most recent edition of SAP SuccessFactors in 2019. There have also been architectural changes made, as well as a new SAP Fiori-based user interface.

SuccessFactors’ Challenges

SAP SuccessFactors confronts integration problems with its parent company’s traditional HCM and ERP software as a SaaS provider bought by another vendor. A major portion of SuccessFactors’ initial customer base added the talent management tools but kept their existing core HR systems from different suppliers. The issue creates challenging choices about whether to switch to SuccessFactors altogether by adding Employee Central, a move that would offer integration and data migration challenges.

SAP users that utilize the SAP HCM suite on-premises or third-party software for all or most of their HR tasks must decide whether or not to migrate to SAP SuccessFactors. SAP said in 2018 that SAP HCM users will eventually be required to utilize S/4HANA HCM, an on-premises HCM suite for S/4HANA, the company’s next-generation ERP package. SAP made it clear, however, that SuccessFactors will get the majority of its HCM development resources and will be the ultimate upgrade path for HCM consumers.
